A barcode won't scan
- Hold the code 15–25 cm away rather than right up against the lens. iPhone Pro cameras cannot focus closer than that.
- Avoid glare: tilt the phone slightly, or turn on the torch in the in-app camera.
- Curved or crumpled labels read better when flattened.
- If the in-app camera struggles, use the Apple scanner; it's what the Scan tab opens by default.
Where are my scans?
In the History tab, newest first. They are stored on your device only, so they don't sync between devices and are not backed up to a Scanlog server, because there isn't one. Deleting the app deletes the history.
Exporting to CSV
History → Export CSV creates a file of everything currently listed (a search narrows it) and opens the share sheet, so you can AirDrop it to a Mac, save it to Files or email it. It opens directly in Excel and Numbers.
Batch scanning
Turn on Batch mode before scanning. The scanner stays open and saves each new code with a short vibration; swipe down when you're finished. The same code is ignored until it leaves the frame for a moment, so you won't get duplicates from holding it in view.
Stock counts
Counts tab → + to start a count (give it a name, and a location if you're counting a specific aisle, room or van). Open it and tap Scan into this count: every scan adds one unit, and scanning the same code again increments it rather than creating a second line.
- Item names. Tap a line to give the code a name. Scanlog remembers it and reuses it in every future count.
- Fixing a number. Use the − / + steppers on a line, or tap the line to type the quantity directly.
- Expected list. Paste in
code, quantityrows (one per line; tabs, semicolons and a header row are all fine) and the count shows matched, short, over, missing and unexpected. - Merge. If two people counted separately on two phones, export one and merge it into the other to add the quantities together.
- Close and Reopen. Closing marks a count finished; reopen it if you need to recount.
- Export CSV. Code, name, location, counted, expected and variance columns.
- Delete. On the count screen; it removes the count and its lines and cannot be undone.
Feedback while counting
Apple's scanner is a screen owned by iOS, so no app can draw a running total on top of it. Instead you get a double vibration for a new item and a single one for another unit of the same item, and Scanlog speaks the item and its new total aloud. If you'd rather see the counter, switch to Use the in-app camera instead, which shows the running total, the last item scanned and a Stop button. Silence the spoken confirmations with the phone's silent switch or by turning the volume down.
Creating barcodes
The Create tab makes a code from typed data in 16 formats (QR, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec, EAN/UPC, Code 128, Code 39, ITF-14 and more). Missing check digits are filled in for you, and invalid input is explained rather than silently rejected. The builders write the payload for you for a contact card, Wi-Fi network, link, email, SMS, phone number or calendar event.
Tap the code to show it full screen, and the screen brightens and stays awake so a scanner can read it off the glass. Share sends a PNG, and Save to Photos writes it to your library (iOS will ask for permission to add photos the first time; Scanlog never reads your library).
What the warnings mean
- Check digit invalid. The barcode's own maths doesn't add up, so it was probably misread. Scan it again.
- Link warnings. The site isn't encrypted, uses lookalike international characters, is a bare IP address, or hides its real destination behind an "@". Read the domain before opening it.
- GS1 prefix. Shows where the brand registered its barcode, which is not necessarily where the product was made.
Privacy
Scanlog collects nothing and makes no network calls. See the privacy policy.
